Enniskillen is Northern Ireland's lakeland town, built on an island between Upper and Lower Lough Erne. The setting matters: water presses in from both sides, boats move through town, and much of the best sightseeing is either on the river or within a short drive of it.
The castle anchors the centre and tells the military story of a border town that has seen more history than its calm streets suggest. Beyond the town, Devenish Island, Castle Coole, and Florence Court make Enniskillen a strong base for Fermanagh.
It is compact enough to walk, but the real pleasure is to get on the water. A short cruise or self-drive boat trip changes the place from a pretty county town into an island town with a whole lake system at its door.
