Guildhall

The Guildhall stands just outside the city walls beside Shipquay Gate and is the most ornate Victorian building in Derry. Built in 1890 and rebuilt after a fire in 1908, it is the seat of Derry City and Strabane District Council and is notable for its elaborate stained glass windows tracing the history of the city, and for the four-sided clock tower above the main entrance.

The building is open to visitors during business hours and entry is free. The Great Hall can be visited when not in use for council business — the stained glass here is particularly good, with panels depicting scenes from the plantation era. The Guildhall also runs an exhibition on the city's history in the ground floor spaces, providing good context before walking the walls.
