Ballymacdermott Court Tomb is one of the better prehistoric sites near Newry, set on the southern slopes of Ballymacdermott Mountain within the Ring of Gullion landscape. The tomb's court and three chambers date from the Neolithic period, roughly 4000 to 2500 BC, and the stonework is clear enough that you do not need much imagination to read the shape of the monument.
The setting is as important as the archaeology. From the hill you get views towards Slieve Gullion, the Mournes, and the Cooley Mountains, so it fits naturally into a drive or walk around the border hills rather than a quick urban stop.
