Newry Cathedral

Newry Cathedral sits on Hill Street, its slender twin granite spires visible from much of the town. The interior is bright with Italian marble, an elaborate high altar, and a complete set of Harry Clarke stained glass windows in the side chapels — easily the best reason to spend half an hour inside.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Dromore is based here. The cathedral is open daily; volunteers and clergy are often happy to talk about the building. Mass is held regularly, including a Saturday vigil.

A story
The Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Colman, opened in 1829, was the first Catholic cathedral built in Ireland after the Catholic Emancipation Act of that same year. Its bishop at the time, William Crolly, used the moment quite deliberately — the cathedral was, in effect, a public statement of restored Catholic civic life after two centuries of legal disability.
