Newry Town Hall

Newry Town Hall is the town's most distinctive piece of Victorian architecture, a granite building with a clock tower that straddles the Clanrye river in the centre of town. It still serves as a civic building and is open during office hours for anyone who wants a look at the council chamber.

The bridge setting is unusual enough to be worth a small walk around — the view down the river from either side gives the best photograph. The buildings on the surrounding streets are an interesting mix of grey granite warehouses from the town's canal era and later commercial frontages.

A story
The hall is built directly on a bridge over the Clanrye river, partly because the town's two halves — Newry proper and Ballybot — were in different counties (Down and Armagh) and neither wanted the building on the other's land. Putting it over the river kept everyone honest. Construction finished in 1893.
