The Causeway Coast is a year-round destination but the experience varies considerably by season.
Summer (June–August) is peak season. The Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede, and Dunluce Castle all see their heaviest visitor numbers; queues form at popular spots and parking fills by mid-morning. The light can be extraordinary, especially in the long evenings. Book accommodation well in advance.
Spring and autumn are the recommended times for most visitors: crowds are manageable, the landscape is often at its most dramatic (spring wildflowers, autumn storm light), and prices are lower. The coast faces northwest and Atlantic weather can come in at any time of year; even summer can produce weeks of grey and wet weather.
Winter empties the coast almost completely. The Giant's Causeway in December, with waves crashing over the columns and no other visitors, is an experience most people who've done it rate more highly than the summer version. Opening hours at visitor facilities are reduced.
North West 200 (third week of May) brings 100,000+ visitors to the area; roads are closed and accommodation sells out months ahead.
