Tanera Mòr is the largest of the Summer Isles and the only one with any permanent habitation — a small fishing community that has seen its population dwindle to a handful of full-time residents. The island sits in the mouth of Loch Broom, visible from Achiltibuie's shoreline on clear days, and it rewards the short boat crossing with total quiet, seabird colonies, and views back to the mainland mountains.
The island has a small tearoom open in summer for day visitors, making it one of the more comfortable of the uninhabited-adjacent islands to explore. Seals haul out on the rocks around the shoreline, and the birding — fulmars, guillemots, razorbills — is excellent along the cliffs. Boat trips depart from Achiltibuie and from Ullapool depending on the season; check locally for current schedules.
