The Lochranza Distillery produces Isle of Arran single malt, a style that tends toward the lighter, more floral end of Scottish whisky. The visitor centre is well-appointed and the standard tour takes about an hour, walking through the full production process from mash tun to still house to warehouses. Tours run most of the year and include a tasting.
The setting contributes as much as the whisky: the distillery sits below the hills on the edge of the loch, surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes you understand why people choose to make whisky in remote places rather than in cities. A shop sells the full range of Arran expressions, including distillery-exclusive bottlings not available elsewhere. If you are driving, designate a non-drinker or arrange the timing so you can walk back to the village.
