A short walk across the Deveron bridge to Macduff brings you to the Marine Aquarium, a small but well-presented family attraction devoted to the marine life of the Moray Firth. The centrepiece is a deep central tank topped with live kelp — one of the few open-topped kelp displays in Britain — surrounded by smaller tanks of native species: wolffish, congers, octopus, ray, and the usual rockpool inhabitants.

Daily feeding talks and rockpool sessions make it a good rainy-day stop with children. The aquarium is run as a charity by the local authority and admission is modest. Combined with a walk along Macduff harbour, it's an easy half-day outing from Banff.
