This is the town's strangest and strongest sight: a preserved 19th-century gasworks with retorts, purifiers, and gas holders left from the age when every town made its own coal gas. It is a compact museum, but the machinery tells a clear story of how modern lighting and cooking arrived before the national gas grid made places like this obsolete.
