Biggar is a small market town in the upper Clyde country, between Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Borders. It is not grand, but it has an odd and rather likeable mix of attractions: Scotland's surviving town gasworks, a strong local museum, a puppet theatre, and the art garden of Little Sparta in the hills to the north.
The town itself is easy to handle on foot. The High Street has the practical feel of a working rural town rather than a polished weekend escape, and that is part of the charm. Come for a slow half-day, then decide whether to head up to Tinto or out to Little Sparta if the weather is behaving.
