The Malt Whisky Trail runs through Speyside — the valley of the River Spey from Grantown through Aberlour and Craigellachie toward the coast at Fochabers — and takes in nine distilleries and the famous Speyside Cooperage. This is whisky country in an almost literal sense: the smell of fermenting barley drifts across the valley in summer, and distillery chimneys mark every village. The trail is officially outside the national park but is easily combined with a Cairngorms visit.
Glenfarclas, Glenfiddich, The Macallan, and Cardhu are among the distilleries offering tours and tastings. Most charge a modest fee for the tour and return it in whisky credits against purchases. Glenfiddich is the most polished visitor experience; Glenfarclas the most traditional family-owned operation. The Speyside Cooperage outside Craigellachie is the largest working cooperage in Scotland and gives a genuinely unexpected insight into the barrel-making that shapes whisky flavour.
