The Cairngorms offer two distinct modes: the high plateau for experienced hill walkers and mountaineers, and the more accessible forest and loch country for everyone else. On the plateau, Ben Macdui and Braeriach are the great summits; the Lairig Ghru is the classic through-route. The Cairngorm Mountain Railway gives access to the Cairn Gorm summit area without walking.
In the forest, Rothiemurchus has ancient Caledonian pines, red squirrels, and excellent paths; Loch an Eilein has a ruined castle on an island. Wildlife highlights include the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd roaming free above the tree line and the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig. The Speyside Whisky Trail runs along the park's northern edge. Aviemore is the main service hub and railway access point.
