Robert Burns House

Plain sandstone house where Robert Burns spent his final years and died in 1796.

This modest house on Burns Street is where Robert Burns lived from 1793 until his death in 1796. It is not grand, which is exactly the point: the rooms, manuscripts, domestic objects, and period setting bring the last chapter of Scotland's national poet down to human scale.

Pair it with Burns' mausoleum in St Michael's kirkyard and the Robert Burns Centre across the river. Together they explain why Dumfries is still one of the key places for understanding Burns after Alloway.
