Dumfries rewards travellers who like literary history, ruined stone, and small museums with a strong local story. The Burns sites are the heart of the town, but Moat Brae, the old bridge, and the Nith valley sights give it more range than a single-theme stop.
Several of the best places are just outside town. Caerlaverock Castle and Sweetheart Abbey sit south toward the estuary, while Ellisland Farm is upstream in the landscape Burns knew before moving into Dumfries.
