Moat Brae

Georgian house and garden linked to J. M. Barrie's childhood idea of Peter Pan.

Moat Brae is the Dumfries house and garden where J. M. Barrie played as a schoolboy. He later connected those games with the imaginative world that became Peter Pan, and the restored house now works as Scotland's National Centre for Children's Literature and Storytelling.

The attraction is at its best if you let the garden matter as much as the rooms. It is a literary site, but also a reminder that some famous stories begin in very ordinary childhood places.
