Elie Beach

Long curving sand beach inside a sheltered bay, often quiet even in summer

Probably the best beach on the east coast of Scotland and certainly the most surprising — proper white-gold sand, a long gentle curve held by Elie Ness lighthouse at one end and the harbour at the other. The bay is sheltered enough that the water is usable for swimming on warm days and good for paddling on most others.

Even in August it doesn't feel crowded. The cricket pitch at the eastern end is for the Earlsferry side; in summer there are matches on the sand at low tide, which is about as Scottish-eccentric as it gets. Walk to the western tip and look back at the village — there is a reason watercolour painters keep coming here.
