The small hamlet of Tarbet, a few miles north of Scourie, is the departure point for the passenger ferry to Handa Island. The crossing takes about ten minutes and runs on demand throughout the season — typically from April to early September — weather permitting. There is no booking; you simply turn up, pay a modest fare, and wait for the ferryman to take a group across.
Tarbet itself is minimal: a car park, a few houses, and a view across the sound to the island's southern shore. The road down from the A894 is single-track and passes through open moorland. If you arrive and find the sea too rough for the crossing, the view from Tarbet across to the Stack cliffs is itself worth the drive.
