Inveraray Jail uses the town's old courthouse and prison to tell a rougher story than the castle. The jail operated in the 19th century, later served as a courthouse, and now recreates the cells, punishments, courtrooms, and daily misery of prison life.
It is theatrical, but effective. Pairing the jail with the castle gives Inveraray a useful contrast between power upstairs and punishment downstairs.
