Inveraray is a small town on Loch Fyne with a carefully staged look. The Duke of Argyll rebuilt it in the late 18th century, leaving a planned town of whitewashed buildings, a church on a traffic island, and a castle that still dominates the view.
The big stops are unusually strong for a town this small. Inveraray Castle gives the place its aristocratic scale, while Inveraray Jail turns the old courthouse and prison into a vivid museum. Above town, the Dun na Cuaich Watchtower gives the best view back over Loch Fyne.
Inveraray works well as a day stop between Glasgow, Oban, and the western peninsulas. Add Auchindrain Historic Township or Crarae Garden if you have a car and want the day to stretch beyond the town centre.
