Hume Castle stands on a hill north of Kelso, a blunt walled ruin with a far larger presence than its surviving masonry suggests. The site commands open Borders views, which explains its long defensive value as well as its appeal today.
It is a short outing rather than a full castle visit. Go for the panorama, the wind, and the sense of the Tweed country spreading around you, then pair it with Kelso Abbey or Floors Castle for a fuller day in the Borders.
