Achins Bookshop

Achins Bookshop sits at Inverkirkaig, about five kilometres south of Lochinver, at the point where the road ends and a track continues to the Falls of Kirkaig. It is one of the most remote independent bookshops in Scotland, and improbably well stocked for its location. The shelves lean toward natural history, geology, and the Highlands, with a strong selection of maps and local guides.

The bookshop is the standard starting point for the approach to Suilven via the Kirkaig path. From here the track follows the River Kirkaig upstream through birch and rowan woodland, with the falls a reasonable target in themselves after about two kilometres. The path to the base of Suilven continues beyond the falls for several more kilometres through open moorland.

A story
Achins opened in the 1970s and has been run by the same family for decades. It stocks an extraordinary selection of books on Scottish natural history, geology, archaeology, and walking — the kind of specialist stock that most large city bookshops cannot manage. Finding it at the end of a remote track through Highland bog is one of those experiences that makes you wonder why you live anywhere with proper roads.
