Ardvreck Castle stands in ruins beside Loch Assynt, north of Lochinver, with one of the finest settings in the northwest Highlands. The remains are fragmentary, but the water, mountains, and open sky make the place feel much larger than the masonry left behind.
It is an easy stop on the Assynt road rather than a formal castle visit. Go in changeable weather if you can tolerate it, because the shifting light over Quinag and the loch is half the reason to come.
