Old Man of Stoer

A 60-metre sea stack off Stoer Head, reached by a wild cliff walk from the lighthouse.

The Old Man of Stoer is a freestanding sandstone sea stack below the cliffs north of Lochinver. The walk from Stoer Head Lighthouse is not long by Highland standards, but it feels exposed and elemental, with sea birds, wind, and open views across the Minch.

Most visitors come for the cliff-top view rather than the climb. Climbers treat the stack as a serious route involving tides, ropes, and a committing sea crossing, while walkers should be content with firm footwear, weather sense, and a healthy distance from the cliff edge.
