Across Loch Nevis from Mallaig lies the Knoydart peninsula, sixty square miles of mountain and bog with no road in or out. The pedestrian ferry from Mallaig harbour takes about half an hour to reach the village of Inverie — population around a hundred — which sits on a sheltered bay with a single street, a community shop, a few self-catering cottages, and the Old Forge pub.
Most visitors come for a single day; the more committed walk in from the east, over the Mam Barrisdale or the Mam Meadail, in a two-day approach that crosses some of the wildest land in Britain. From Inverie there are good day-walks up the surrounding Munros — Ladhar Bheinn and Luinne Bheinn are both attainable for fit walkers, but check the weather, as cloud cover can drop within minutes.
