A short walk inland from the railway and the road, Loch Morar opens out into one of the great hidden lochs of Scotland. It is the deepest freshwater body in the British Isles, divided from the sea by less than a mile of land, and threaded with wooded islands at its western end. The road dies out beyond Bracorina; from there a rough path runs along the north shore for ten or twelve kilometres into wild country that is genuinely difficult to leave.
The loch is best approached on foot from the village of Morar, where a small bridge crosses the short River Morar — the shortest river in Scotland. Wild swimming is excellent on warm days, though the water is cold even in August. Bring midge repellent in summer.
