Dufftown and the Malt Whisky Trail

Dufftown, a small town in the Dullan Water valley, calls itself the whisky capital of the world, and the claim is defensible. The Malt Whisky Trail is a signposted driving route through Speyside linking nine distilleries, and Dufftown sits at its heart. Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie all operate from the same cluster of Victorian stone buildings on the southern edge of town. Mortlach, the oldest legal distillery in Dufftown, is a fifteen-minute walk from the square.

The distilleries vary in their visitor experience. Glenfiddich is the most polished — purpose-built visitor centre, multiple tour options, an excellent shop — while Balvenie, with its traditional floor maltings still in operation, is the most instructive. The Dufftown Museum in the old clock tower on the square provides local context. Dufftown is about an hour's drive south of Elgin through attractive agricultural landscape.

A story
The local saying is that "Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown was built on seven stills." The town actually has eight distilleries in or around it today, including Glenfiddich — the world's bestselling single malt — which was founded here in 1887 by William Grant with just £700 and a second-hand still bought from a neighbouring distillery. The original Christmas Day launch date was chosen simply because Grant's sons happened to be available to help.
