Elgin is the main town and the most convenient base. It sits on the A96, the main road between Inverness and Aberdeen, and is served by both cities' transport networks.
By train: Elgin has a railway station on the Inverness–Aberdeen line, with regular services to both cities. Journey time from Inverness is about 40 minutes; from Aberdeen, about an hour and a half. Direct trains run from Edinburgh via Perth, though most require a change.
By car: From Inverness, the A96 east takes about 40 minutes to Elgin. From Aberdeen the same road west takes just over an hour. The A9 from the south connects to Inverness, and from there the A96 continues east. The Speyside distilleries are concentrated along the A941 south of Elgin toward Dufftown, about 30 kilometres.
By air: Inverness Airport is the closest, about 45 minutes west of Elgin by car. Aberdeen Airport is an hour and a quarter away. Both have connections to London, Edinburgh, and other major UK cities.
