Dundarg Castle

Dundarg Castle stands on a dramatic red sandstone headland to the east of New Aberdour, jutting into the Moray Firth. Only fragmentary ruins remain above ground, but the clifftop position is spectacular — on a clear day you can see across the firth toward the Black Isle and beyond.

The promontory is a short walk from the beach along the coastal path. The red sandstone cliffs here are striking, eroded into ridges and stacks by the sea. Look out for fulmars nesting on the ledges in summer. The walk from the village takes about twenty minutes.

A story
Dundarg Castle sits on a promontory of the distinctive red sandstone that gives this part of Aberdeenshire its colour. The site was fortified in the Pictish period — traces of an Iron Age fort lie beneath the medieval remains. It later passed through the hands of the Comyn family, who were rivals of Robert the Bruce, before falling into ruin.
