Barony Mill

Working watermill where Orkney bere barley is still ground the old way

Barony Mill keeps alive Orkney's old bere barley tradition, using 19th-century milling machinery powered by water. It is not a grand museum, and that is the point: the interest is in the mechanics, the grain, and the continuity with a crop that has fed the islands for centuries.

Visits are usually by guided tour in season. It pairs well with Kirbuster Farm Museum, because together they explain the domestic and working side of Orkney that the headline archaeological sites leave out.
