Kirbuster Farm Museum

Traditional Orkney farmstead with a central hearth and stone neuk bed

Kirbuster Farm Museum preserves a way of living that survived in Orkney far longer than visitors expect: a central peat hearth, a stone neuk bed, byres, tools, and the hard practical detail of island farming. It is one of those small museums that quietly changes how you look at the landscape outside.

The museum is inland from Birsay, so it is easiest by car or bicycle. It is especially useful after seeing Skara Brae or the Brough of Birsay, because it shows how deep some island habits run.
