Getting There

Pitlochry is on the main Highland rail line from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Inverness, which makes it one of the more accessible smaller Highland towns.

By train: ScotRail runs services from Edinburgh Waverley to Pitlochry (about 1 hour 45 minutes) and from Glasgow Queen Street (about 2 hours) on the Highland Main Line. Trains continue to Blair Atholl and Inverness. The station is central, a few minutes' walk from the main street.

By car: Pitlochry is on the A9, the main road north from Perth to Inverness. From Edinburgh, the drive takes about 1 hour 45 minutes via the M90 and A9. From Glasgow, allow 2 hours via the M80, A9. The A9 is a good road but carries heavy truck traffic and has a variable speed limit; pay attention to speed cameras.

By bus: Scottish Citylink operates coaches between Edinburgh, Perth, and Inverness that stop at Pitlochry. The journey from Edinburgh takes about 2 hours and is cheaper than the train. Local buses serve the surrounding villages.

Note for walkers: Pitlochry is a base for walking in the Perthshire Highlands, including access to Ben Vrackie (841m), the most prominent hill directly above the town, and the paths to the Killiecrankie gorge, Loch Tummel, and beyond.
