Moulin Village and Pub

Moulin is a small village a kilometre above Pitlochry, reached by a short but steep walk up from the town through a wooded lane. The village is quiet and old — it has a medieval church and the ruined Black Castle above it — but the main attraction for most visitors is the Moulin Inn, a seventeenth-century pub that brews its own ales on the premises. The beers (Braveheart, Ale of Atholl, and seasonal specials) are well-made and the pub has the particular quality of a place that hasn't tried to improve itself out of its original character.

The ruins of the Black Castle of Moulin sit on the hill above the village, a fourteenth-century tower house associated with the Lords of Atholl. The castle is romantically ruined — barely enough remains to indicate the original structure, but the setting above the village and the views it commands over the valley below are worth the short scramble.

From Moulin, a path continues through the hills toward Edradour distillery, making a natural circuit from Pitlochry: up through Moulin, along to Edradour for a distillery visit, and back down to Pitlochry by a different path. The walk takes about two hours without dawdling.
