The Black Castle of Moulin is a small ruined stronghold on the edge of Pitlochry, close enough to town to work as part of a local walk rather than a formal castle visit. It was built in the 14th century for the Campbells of Lochawe, on a defensive site that once used marshy ground and water as protection. The loch is gone, and the castle is now a rough shell, but the position still makes sense when you see it from the Moulin road.
Come for a short historic detour, not for furnished rooms or a ticketed attraction. The ruins fit naturally into the Moulin and Black Spout walking loop, especially if you want something older and less manicured than Pitlochry's distilleries and theatre. Wear shoes that can handle damp grass after rain.
