Ronas Hill

Shetland's highest hill, with Arctic-alpine plants and a Neolithic summit cairn

Ronas Hill is only 450 metres high, but in Shetland that is enough to feel like a mountain. The top is a broad, stony, windswept place with Arctic-alpine plants and long views over Northmavine, Yell Sound, and the surrounding sea.

Near the summit is a Neolithic chambered cairn, an unusually high and exposed burial monument. Treat the walk seriously: there is little shelter, and clear weather can turn quickly.
