Scalloway Castle is a late-16th-century tower house built for Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney and Shetland, remembered locally as "Black Patie". Historic Environment Scotland describes it as one of only two castles built in Shetland and a lasting symbol of his harsh rule.
The castle is roofless and compact, but it dominates the village's historic core. Even from outside, its tall grey walls explain why Scalloway mattered before Lerwick took over as Shetland's capital.
