Jarlshof

Multi-period settlement where 4,000 years of Shetland life can be read in stone.

Jarlshof is the reason Sumburgh clears the bar. Storms exposed the site in the late 19th century, revealing a dense archaeological stack: Bronze Age houses, an Iron Age broch and wheelhouses, Norse longhouses, medieval farm buildings, and a later laird's house.

Few places in Scotland make the depth of settlement so visible in one walk. The site is exposed, so dress for wind even on a bright day.
