The Bad Step

Notorious rocky traverse on the Loch Coruisk route, for confident walkers in settled weather.

The Bad Step is a short but famous obstacle on the rough coastal route between Elgol and Loch Coruisk. Its reputation comes from exposure rather than length: a sloping rock step above the water that can feel very different depending on weather, footwear, and nerves.

It belongs in the guide because it shapes a real travel decision. If you are not comfortable with exposed scrambling, use a boat to Loch Coruisk or choose a different walk; if you are, the route is one of Skye's great rough-edge days.
