Elgol is a tiny village on the southern coast of Skye, reached by a winding single-track road from Broadford that passes beneath the dramatic peak of Blaven — the Black Cuillin summit detached from the main ridge. The drive alone is worth the trip.
The village itself is small, but its main claim to fame is as the access point for Loch Coruisk, surely one of the most beautiful spots in the British Isles. Boat trips run from Elgol into the heart of the Cuillin mountains to reach this remote freshwater loch. On foot, the coastal walk to Camasunary beach is easy and delightful, but between there and Coruisk lies the notorious "Bad Step" — less about technical difficulty than the high exposure above the sea, which means it is only for those with no fear of heights. The longer approach from Sligachan avoids the Bad Step entirely.
