Colbost Croft Museum

A restored blackhouse — the long, low, thatched dwelling that was standard in the Hebrides until the early 20th century — kitted out as a working croft house of around 1900. The hearth in the middle of the floor still smokes, the box bed is in the corner, and the smell of peat sits heavy in the air. It is the most evocative of the small folk museums on Skye.

Outside, an illicit whisky still sits in a stone bothy, a reminder of how much of Skye's whisky was distilled in defiance of the excise. The museum is small, half an hour at most, and a useful counterpoint to the Three Chimneys restaurant directly across the road — high cuisine and hard subsistence within fifty metres of each other.
