Glendale is a remote crofting township at the western tip of Skye, seven miles west of Dunvegan in the Duirinish peninsula. The area is associated with the MacLeod clan and with an 1882 land reform dispute — the "Battle of the Braes" — when local crofters resisted eviction and helped spark the legislation that eventually protected Scottish tenants' rights.
Today Glendale draws visitors for its scenery and its unusual attractions. The Glendale Toy Museum has an eclectic collection of antique and vintage toys from around the world. Craft studios and a community cafe round out the options. The peninsula's dramatic sea cliffs — Waterstein Head and Neist Point lighthouse, the westernmost point on Skye — are within easy reach and offer some of the best walking and sea-watching on the island. Minke whales and basking sharks are sometimes visible from the cliffs in summer. Across the moor at Colbost, the Three Chimneys restaurant and the Colbost Croft Museum sit a stone's throw apart — a study in contrasts.
