Glen Sligachan

Long glaciated valley running south into the heart of the Cuillin

Glen Sligachan is the long, U-shaped valley that runs south from the hotel into the very heart of the Cuillin. The path is well-trodden and clear, hugging the river through wet, peaty ground with the Black Cuillin rising on the right and the Red Cuillin on the left. Walking the full length to Camasunary Bay on the south coast takes around four hours one way, but most visitors turn back after a couple of hours at the loch at the foot of Marsco.

The walk is one of the great low-level routes in Britain. There is no shelter, no phone signal, and weather can change in minutes — bring waterproofs, food, and a map even on what looks like a fine day. The reward is feeling completely encircled by mountains while never having to climb one.
