Iconic spike of black gabbro at the northern end of the Cuillin

The pyramid-shaped peak at the northern end of the Black Cuillin ridge is the mountain you see in every photograph from Sligachan. At 964 metres it is a Munro, but it is far more serious than the height suggests — the final summit is a sharp gabbro pinnacle reached only by scrambling on exposed rock, and most walkers find a guide for the day.

The popular tourist route from Sligachan follows a path up to the col below the peak, giving a fine close-up view of the ridge for those not equipped for the summit scramble. The Pinnacle Ridge, a classic mountaineering route on the eastern flank, is one of the great rock climbs of Britain.

A story
The first ascent was made in 1836 by Professor James Forbes and his guide Duncan MacIntyre, a local stalker. It was the first time a Cuillin peak was climbed by a recorded party and the start of nearly two centuries of climbing history on Skye.
