The Llŷn Peninsula is genuinely remote. You need a car to explore it properly — public transport reaches the main towns but not the beaches or headlands that are the main attractions.
By car: From the A55 North Wales Expressway, turn south at Caernarfon onto the A487 and then west from Porthmadog on the A497. From the Midlands and London, the journey to Porthmadog is around 4–5 hours. Narrow lanes are the norm once you leave the main A497 and A499 roads — drive slowly and use passing places.
By train: Porthmadog and Pwllheli are served by the Cambrian Coast Line from Machynlleth (with connections from Birmingham and the Midlands via Shrewsbury). The journey to Pwllheli takes around 3 hours from Shrewsbury. Trains are infrequent — check times carefully and don't miss the last one.
By bus: Arriva Cymru buses connect the peninsula's main towns with Caernarfon and Porthmadog. Service is sparse outside the summer season.
