Antigua Recreation Ground

The Antigua Recreation Ground is the island's historic cricket venue and one of the most famous grounds in West Indies cricket. Known as the ARG, it hosted Test matches from 1981 to 2007 and was the scene of some of the most celebrated innings in the game's history, most of them involving local hero Viv Richards.

The ground has since been superseded by the newer Sir Vivian Richards Stadium for major international fixtures, but the ARG retains a special place in Antiguan identity. The atmosphere at domestic and regional matches remains intimate and passionate. Check local schedules if you are visiting during cricket season — a match here, with the crowd in full voice, is one of the Caribbean's best sporting experiences.

A story
The ARG was the stage for one of cricket's most extraordinary performances: on 11 April 1986, Viv Richards smashed 189 not out against England — the fastest century in Test cricket history at the time, reached in just 56 balls. The ground erupted. Richards, playing in front of his home crowd, called it the greatest innings of his career.
