St. John's Harbour is the main port and commercial gateway of Antigua and Barbuda. On cruise ship days it can be packed with visiting passengers, but early morning and evening the harbour has a working-port character — fishing boats unloading, supply vessels at anchor, and the distant smell of salt air and diesel.
The harbour is also the departure point for ferry and charter boats heading to Barbuda, the smaller sister island roughly 60 kilometres north, and for sailing excursions around Antigua's remarkable coastline. Standing on the quay and looking south, you can see the entrance channel flanked by old British fortifications — a reminder that this harbour was strategically crucial for centuries of colonial naval power.
