Bon Bini Festival

The Bon Bini Festival is a weekly event held every Tuesday evening in the courtyard of Fort Zoutman, Oranjestad's oldest building. It is one of the most accessible introductions to Aruban culture: local musicians play tumba and waltz, folkloric dance groups perform, artisans sell locally made craft items, and food stalls offer snacks and drinks. The atmosphere is cheerful and entirely unpretentious.

It is pitched at tourists but does not feel staged. Aruban families attend alongside visitors, and the performances reflect a genuine pride in the island's multicultural identity — a mix of Arawak, African, Dutch, and Latin American influences. Entry is inexpensive, the event runs for a couple of hours, and it pairs well with dinner at one of the nearby restaurants afterward.

A story
"Bon bini" means "welcome" in Papiamento, the creole language of the ABC islands. The festival has been held in the courtyard of Fort Zoutman every Tuesday evening since 1981. It was established partly in response to the growth of mass tourism — an attempt to give visitors a genuine encounter with Aruban music, dance, and crafts rather than a hotel lobby version.
