The Albert Lowe Museum in New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay is the best local history museum in the Abacos. It occupies a restored loyalist cottage — whitewashed plank walls, low ceilings, wide-board floors — and tells the story of the American loyalist families who settled the northern Bahamas after the Revolution and built a boatbuilding and wrecking economy that sustained them for more than a century.
The collection includes ship models, tools from the boatbuilding trade, period furniture, and the paintings of Alton Lowe, a Bahamian artist and son of the museum's founder, whose work documented island life in the mid-20th century. The family still runs the museum. It's small enough to see in under an hour but worth every minute for anyone interested in the islands' history.
