Glass Window Bridge

The Glass Window is the narrowest point on Eleuthera, where the island is barely 30 metres wide. A single road bridge spans the gap. To the east the deep navy of the Atlantic, smashed by surf; to the west the pale turquoise of the Bight of Eleuthera, calm and shallow. Side-by-side, the contrast is startling.

Stop at the small parking area on the south side. The cliffs north of the bridge give the best photograph. Take care: cars and trucks share the narrow road, and storm surge can clear the bridge with little warning.

A story
Storm surges have repeatedly destroyed the bridge — the worst, in 1991, pushed the road bed sideways by several metres, and the displaced section is still in place. Photographs from the 1920s show a natural arch where the bridge now stands; the ocean simply broke through it.
