Bitter Guana Cay Iguanas

A few miles south of Staniel sits Bitter Guana Cay, home to a colony of endemic Bahamian rock iguanas (Cyclura cychlura). They wait on the beach for visitors and have learned that boats often mean grapes — though authorities now ask that you do not feed them, because human food shortens their lifespan.

The cay is uninhabited and protected. Walk up to the limestone cliffs at the back of the beach to see the iguanas at home; snorkel the small reef just offshore for parrotfish and angelfish. Boats from Staniel Cay include the cay on most circuit tours.
